Why Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Instructors (also known as SAF Trainers) can be exceptional candidates for Learning & Development (L&D) jobs?

SAF places a lot of emphasis on having highly trained & experienced Instructors for their training units such as Schools & Training Institutes.

To begin with, SAF personnel who are appointed as Instructors or Trainers are usually required to go through Instructor Development Courses starting from SAF Instructor Course (SIC) as foundation, then SAF Senior Instructor Courses (SSICs), followed by SAF Master Instructor Course (SMIC), at Institute for Military Learning (IML).

In 2014, IML attained the Singapore Workforce Development Agency’s In-house Approved Training Organisation (ATO) status, this means IML is approved to conduct Training & Assessment for programmes belonging to the Singapore Training & Adult Education (TAE) Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) Framework.

Attaining ATO status for the TAE WSQ Framework, adds even more credibility to SAF’s already existing & continuing efforts to skill our Instructors in Learning Needs Analysis, Learning Design & Development, Learning Assessment & Evaluation, Delivery of Learning & Training Interventions.

Notwithstanding the above, by the time SAF Instructors & Trainers attend SMIC, they would have attained the equivalent of a Chief Trainer appointment (leading & conducting qualification course for new trainers as stated in Army WOSpec Guide) with at least 10 years of experience in the SAF, accumulating much experience managing both operations & training.

After completing SIC, SSICs & SMIC, SAF Instructors & Trainers would have undergone nearly 500 hours of formal Instructor Development & performed nearly 1000 hours of training, coaching & mentoring adults, in addition to Training Development related work.

By now, you would have realised that all the above mentioned skills & experiences fit the profile of a typical L&D Professional.

This might come as a surprise to those not in the military but a significant part of realising SAF’s mission relies on highly trained & well qualified SAF Instructors & Trainers.

Ms Marta Bailey, Senior Advisor of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Headquarters, was in fact impressed by the SAF's learning transformation efforts that she remarked, "We have learnt a lot from what the SAF is doing, and we think that the SAF is probably on the cutting edge (of learning initiatives)”. Such a remark really speaks volume for SAF’s high quality of training.

It is important for recruiters out there to do their best to help realise the SAF Training Development & Instructional Skills to the core competencies of an L&D Professional in corporate Singapore.

It’s a matter of translation of skills between SAF & corporate Singapore. Now there is a translation standard known as Singapore TAE WSQ Framework.

Instructors & Trainers in SAF are well suited & are likely to perform exceptionally well in L&D related roles, ranging from analysing training needs to delivery of training interventions to training evaluation.
